However this does not replace clinical breast examination .Therefore  one should  have  a clinical breast examination annually.

Steps for self breast examination

Visual inspection

Step 1

Start by looking at your breasts with shoulders straight and arms on the hips or hands behind your head. Check out  for:

  1. Breast size ,shape and colour
  2. Breasts that are evenly shaped without distortion or swelling.

Step 2

Raise your hands and look for the same changes

Step 3

While still at the mirror look for any signs of fluid coming out from the nipples.

Step 4

While lying down use the pads of your three middle fingers to feel the breasts , do  not use the tips of your finger.Follow a methodical approach to ensure you examine the entire breast.

For example, imagine the face of a clock over your breast or the slices of a pie. Begin near your collarbone and examine that section, moving your fingers toward your nipple. Then move your fingers to the next section

Step 5

Finally repeat the above steps while standing preferably in the shower. You can lather your fingers and breast with soap and glide more smoothly over the skin
